Caring for spiderlings

Though spiderlings are quite easy to keep, they do die sometimes for no apparent reason, I believe it is the survival of the fittest, when I buy spiderlings I like to buy five at a time, this allows for their mortality rate.

To start with I take a clean film pot and pierce it several times to allow for ventilation. Then half fill with moist vermiculite. In my experience all slings will burrow.

Once it is occupied I place the pot in a nursery tank. This is simply an aquarium tank. At the end of the tank is a large vase of water with an aquarium heater, heater is set to 80 degrees, this supplies the slings with gentle heat and humidity. For a lid I use a piece of polystyrene sheet

I feed them on fruit flies and crickets. I do not use micro crickets, as they tend to die very quickly and work out very expensive. I take a larger cricket and cut it up in to four, just place one piece in the pot, the sling will find it and eat. Check next day and remove any remaining bits.
