The tarantula is divided into two parts, the prosoma and the opisthosoma, the point where these parts join is the pedicel. The opisthosoma is more commonly known as the abdomen
The chelicerae hold the fangs, which a tarantula uses to kill its prey. They also use them to manipulate objects, the male will hold a female by her fangs during mating, they are also used for digging and climbing.
The eyes of a tarantula are very primitive, they can distinguish between light and dark and see shadows of movement. They are arranged in two groups of four, though it is difficult to see all of them they are sometimes covered by the hairs on the carapace.
On the end of the abdomen are the spinnerets, these are used to spin silk. The tarantula does not use silk to catch its prey, but uses it to line the burrow, construct a moulting mat, set lines to warn of approaching prey, it also uses silk to cover its prey, to save it for later, and of course to construct an egg sac. I have one smithi female who has made a feeding mat, a heavy silk mat where she will always eat her food. |
